Mal gave Inara a fairly significant look of his own, because leaving Kaylee in the middle of this was not what he felt comfortable doing. Kaylee offered him a tentative smile, though, so he moved to leave, pausing to kiss her cheek in an uncharacteristic show of affection.

Kaylee smiled a little at that, but it wasn't a very bright smile nor did it last longer than his exiting of the shuttle.
